Welcome to my website. My name is Sophie Manoharan and I am a Brisbane flute player and teacher. I started playing the flute when I was nine years of age and have been actively playing ever since. Throughout my schooling, I participated in various musical ensembles, exams and competitions. I continued my flute playing after school by performing for weddings, various community functions and events, musicals, competitions, and concerts both in Rockhampton and in Brisbane.
I received my Associate Diploma in Flute from the Australian Music Examinations Board in 2000 in Rockhampton under the tuition of Wendy Janke. I moved to Brisbane in 2003 to pursue my musical studies further and studied with Karen Lonsdale privately, before being accepted into the Bachelor of Music course at the University of Queensland in 2004.
I have recently completed my Bachelor of Music (Performance) with first class Honours at the University of Queensland where I studied flute performance under the direction of Jeanette Manricks. Throughout my time at university, I have played with the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the University of Queensland Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mueller International Chamber Orchestra, St Andrew’s Sinfonia, as well as various chamber ensembles. In 2007, I was the recipient of the UQ School of Music Wind Prize and was awarded my Licentiate Diploma in Flute from the Australian Music Examinations Board with Distinction. I currently teach flute in New Farm and am working towards a Master of Philosophy (Music Performance) at the University of Queensland.
